Be it entry-level hatchback lovers or luxury sports car enthusiasts, with a variety of products offered across segments, the Indian passenger car market has a little something for everyone. With both global and indigenous brands competing in a fierce market, only a few are truly able to rise to glory. Much like every month, November 2023 was another good month for carmakers across the nation. Despite big numbers, the overall sales were less than what was reported in the last few months. With 3.35 lakh vehicles sold in the month, the auspicious festival of Dhanteras and Diwali marked the peak of the festive season in the first half, while torrential rains and state election marked a decline in sales in the second half. Nonetheless, with Maruti Suzuki retaining its top spot, here’s what the best-selling car brand list looked like at the end of November 2023.

With a lion’s share of 40.1%, Maruti Suzuki dominated the market, retaining its top spot yet again. Impressive looks, exciting engines and feature-rich offerings, all this is what make Hyundai one of the most sought-after carmakers in India. Crowned as India’s second-largest manufacturer, Hyundai captured the sales charts very well this month with aggregate sales of 49,451 units translating to a year-on-year growth of 3%. In terms of market share, Hyundai managed to secure a decent 14.8% of the market. With this, the brand emerged as the second best-selling car brand of the month.
The recent growth of the carmaker in terms of market share as well as sales can be attributed to factors such as the launch of the all-new Hyundai Exter along with the steady success of offerings such as the recently updated Verna and ever-popular names like the Hyundai Creta. Recent months also saw the launch of the Hyundai i20 and i20 N-Line facelift, refreshing the carmaker’s lineup of vehicles in India. With an inventory consisting of 13 vehicles across segments, Hyundai is all set to witness another successful year ahead. And now with reports suggesting the imminent launch of the Hyundai Creta facelift on 16th January 2024, the future is brighter than ever before for the South Korean carmaker.

Known for its top-tier safety, impeccable build quality, reliable engines and unmatched reliability, Tata Motors has truly evolved over the years in a way that no other carmaker has. Ever since the launch of the Tata Tiago, Tata Motors has completely changed its vision, choosing to offer cars that feel contemporary, competing head-on with both national and international carmakers, emerging as one of India’s most loved brands.
With an inventory led by popular cars such as the Nexon, Safari, and Harrier, Tata has managed to dominate both the ICE as well as the EV segment, with as many as three all-electric offerings. Achieving aggregate sales of 46,070 units, the carmaker registered a small but noticeable year-on-year growth of 0.1% and ruled over 13.8% of the market. With eight equally capable products in its inventory, Tata Motors proudly became India’s third-best-selling car brand. And now with the Tata Nexon and Nexon EV facelift elevating the brand’s portfolio alongside the new Harrier and Safari, Tata is surely set to witness an upward trajectory for several upcoming months.
Mahindra

While there are several carmakers that offer a plethora of cars across segments, what makes Mahindra truly special, is its glorious legacy that has given India some of the most iconic SUVs, tapping into the segment like a boss. Home to veterans such as the Bolero, Thar and Safari along with exciting new additions such as the Scorpio N, Mahindra has even tapped the EV segment with the XUV400
In November 2023, the carmaker managed to secure the fourth spot by selling 39,981 units and registering an impressive growth of 32.2% over the 30,233 units sold in the same month last year. With an inventory comprising ten highly capable and tough SUVs, Mahindra captured 11.9% of the market, which is truly an unimaginable feat considering that the carmaker sells only SUVs. The hero product for the brand this month was undoubtedly the Mahindra Scorpio, which rose to become India’s best-selling SUV of the month.
Kia
![Spinny Assured Kia Sonet GTX](https://d2m3nfprmhqjvd.cloudfront.net/blog/20230724191922/Spinny-Assured-Kia-Sonet-GTX-1160x653.gif)
Entering India in 2019, Kia has managed to make its presence felt. Emerging as one of India’s best carmakers in a short period, despite Kia’s limited four-car inventory, the carmaker’s tasteful integration of sporty looks, exciting driving dynamics and top-notch technology has given it a rather unique identity. And now with Seltos’s latest update adding a breath of fresh air to the segment, Kia’s popularity has surely picked up pace. And if that’s not all, the upcoming Kia Sonet facelift is sure to add some spice to the brand’s portfolio in India.
In the month of November 2023, the carmaker managed to sell an aggregate of 22,762 units despite a 5.3% decline in terms of year-on-year growth. Nonetheless, with offerings like the affordably hot Sonet, the brand captured 6.8% of the market, with a strong future ahead of it thanks to products such as the Carens, Seltos and even the EV6.
Toyota

Ever spot a car running lakhs of kilometres without breaking a sweat? Well, chances are that it is a Toyota. Known to offer cars that are meant to last long, Toyota is a name that is synonymous with robust build quality, timeless reliability, and exhilarating performance. With cults such as the Innova and Fortuner up its sleeve, the carmaker’s recent partnership with Maruti, along with the launch of the new Innova Hycross, and Rumion has pushed the brand’s overall presence and popularity in India.
Selling an aggregate of 16,924 units in the month of November 2023, the carmaker registered a massive 43.9% growth over the 11,765 units the carmaker managed to sell in the same month last year. With this, Toyota captured 5.1.% of the market share with an inventory that offers nine great products across segments, including a premium MPV and a pickup truck as well. Closing in at number six, the month proved to be a good one for Toyota.
Honda
![Spinny Assured Honda City front](https://d2m3nfprmhqjvd.cloudfront.net/blog/20230803180725/Honda-City-front-1160x653.webp)
A global icon revered for its industry-defining engines, unparalleled R&D and consumer-centric innovation, Honda boasts a beautiful legacy of over two decades in India. Despite the stringent emission norms trimming the carmaker’s inventory, offerings such as the Honda City, Honda City Hybrid and the Honda Amaze, continue to help the carmaker tread forward.
And now with the Honda Elevate firing up the SUV segment, it seems as if Honda is all set to slowly regain its lost glory. As for November 2023, the carmaker capitalised the month by registering a year-on-year growth of 23.8% with 8,730 units in November 2023, capturing a decent 2.6% of the market share. With this Honda became the seventh best-selling car brand of the month.
Morris Garages
![Spinny Assured MG Hector front](https://d2m3nfprmhqjvd.cloudfront.net/blog/20230803180728/MG-Hector-front-1160x653.webp)
Much like Kia, Morris Garages is another name that is rather new to the Indian market, with a history that’s only a couple of years old. But despite everything, the carmaker has truly managed to make a steady name for itself thanks to spacious, practical and dynamic cars that the British automaker has in place for the Indian market.
With an inventory that comprises six capable and tech-loaded vehicles, MG’s recent upgrade of the Hector, and the launch of the Comet EV, have made the brand the centre of attention. Managing to sell 4,154 units in November 2023, the brand registered a small but steady year-on-year growth of 1.8% over the 4,079 units it sold in the same month last year. Ruling over 1.2% of the market, the brand’s future in India looks bright.
Skoda
![Spinny Assured Skoda Kushaq front](https://d2m3nfprmhqjvd.cloudfront.net/blog/20230803180722/Skoda-Kushaq-front-1160x653.webp)
The Czech automaker that is known to offer cars that are good-looking, luxurious, premium and extremely fun to drive, Skoda despite its limited inventory of four cars across the SUV and sedan segment managed to become one of India’s best-selling brands this month, thanks to the Kushaq and Slavia.
Selling 3,783 units in November 2023, the carmaker trailed behind MG this month, with a 14.7% decline in terms of year-on-year growth and a market share of 1.1%. However, the brand still has a lot to do, especially when it comes to diversifying its inventory. The return of the Octavia could be a good move for the brand, but what lies ahead is something that time will tell.
Volkswagen
![Spinny Assured VW Virtus front](https://d2m3nfprmhqjvd.cloudfront.net/blog/20231213173549/Spinny-Assured-VW-Virtus-front-1160x653.webp)
The German automaker that is renowned for its intriguing legacy, and quality engineering, Volkswagen managed to tightly hold down its position on the best-seller’s chart with 3,095 units sold in November 2023. With this Volkswagen became the tenth best-selling car brand despite a 13.3% decline in terms of year-on-year growth and with a small market share of 0.9%.
With an inventory consisting of the Taigun, Tiguan and Virtus, Volkswagen despite its limited inventory performed fairly well. Butith that said, considering that the brand has lost the charm it once had, a few new launches across segments can greatly help the brand regain its strength.
